Smelling has by far been the hardest one for them to grasp. They only want to use words like good, bad, or stinky. When they smell something I say "What does it smell like?" And they usually reply with something like this, "It smells like coffee." I know what it is you are smelling but what does it smell like ... strong, bitter, sweet, earthy, dirty, fresh, clean ... and the list could go on. I was reading a book about the sense of smell trying to expand their vocabulary of smelling words. As I read the page about smelling fresh baked bread I asked them what that smells like ..... dead silence.
It was at that moment I knew we had to make bread! So we did :)
All the carefully measured ingredients went into the bread machine ... and by carefully I mean Kindergarten carefully
2 hours and 40 minutes later it was done :) And there were plenty of moments for teaching smelling words throughout this 2 hours and 40 minutes
Then it was time to taste test ...
Then it was time to taste test ...
The results: thumbs up :)
Then came science and we learned about wafting :) These pictures don't even do it justice ... some kids were waving their hands in the air while their nose was in the container. It was great!

I'm hungry just thinking about freshly baked bread. Can you be Luke's kindergarten teacher next year? Thanks.
