The Gingerbread Man

So I am sure you all have heard of the story of the Gingerbread Man. It is that time of the school year where we are doing all things Christmas. So the past week has been all about the Gingerbread Man. To culminate this theme we have a very special project. My class makes a huge gingerbread cookie that we can eat at snack time. So this morning we made the cookie and I let the kids cover it with sprinkles, chocolate chips, and red hots. When we got to the cafeteria for lunch we gave the cookie to the lunch ladies who were going to bake it for us. The kids made sure to remind them to not peek because if you peek then gingerbread cookies tend to run away. So about an hour after lunch time the kids lined up at the door to get our cookie.

One of the reasons I love kids this age is because of their imagination :) We walked down to the cafeteria and we all gathered around the oven to get our cookie out and take it back for snack. As I opened the doors a large gasp went through the crowd of 5 year olds. One captured the moment perfectly, "Oh my gosh, our cookie is gone Mrs. Euken. I think the story is real." I wish I would have been able to take a picture of the students faces at that moment, but it would have given away the "magic". Immediately the search was on. We raced around the school asking everyone we saw if they had seen our gingerbread cookie. The adults of the school were all in on the surprise so they were asking questions like "Does he have sprinkles?" or "Does he sing a song about running fast?" The kids bought into it as the chase went on. We searched all the rooms in the school except the music room. As we walked in to the music room, the students immediately began searching every corner of the room. And this is what they found ...

Our custodian did an awesome job hiding our cookie :) All afternoon the kids could not stop talking about how the cookie really ran away. It was precious! Then we all enjoyed our treat!

Oh to be that age again ... where your biggest worry of the day is where your gingerbread cookie ran away to!
